Petition Against Arming Campus Police

Rhode Island College administration is weighing the option of arming police personnel on campus. Though intended to be a proactive measure in the name of public safety, the reality is that fire-arms provide a false sense of security and fail to address the root causes of violence or victimization. Furthermore, allowing campus police officers to carry deadly weapons would encourage a reactionary culture of policing that capitalizes on fear and militarizes spaces initially intended for learning.
